Regional box office: Marathi and Tamil films lead the south and west

Two small regional films outperform bigger Hindi releases in their home circuits.

The Marathi drama "Vaat" has collected an estimated 4.2 crore in its second week, on 140 screens.

"Vaat" has benefited from strong word of mouth in Pune and Nashik, where it has been held over for a third week. A Tamil family comedy, "Aadi Katha", leads in Chennai with 71 percent occupancy.

Distributors say regional films are now getting more screens because multiplex chains have changed their weekday schedules.

This is a demo story: every name, place, organisation and figure in it is fictional.
